EU proposes MP3 headphone volume controls
The EU reviews its security standards for personal music players after a scientific committee warned that prolonged exposure to loud playback on portable devices could permanently damage hearing.
The European Commission has asked the committee for its opinion, given the growing popularity of portable music players, including mobile phones, especially among youth.
Sales of these devices have soared in recent years. In the EU, 50-100 million people use each day according to the Commission. They estimate that up to 10 million of them are at risk of problems with their hearing in later life.
"There are essentially two problems with personal music players," said a spokesman for the EU. "First, people often use in noisy places - on buses, for example - and must mount the volume . With some devices, the volume will still automatically.
"The other problem is one prolonged use. A volume reduction may be more harmful than the music louder if the exposure is longer.
